This is the single most important thing to understand before moving ZEC, and it is where most confusion originates.
Zcash maintains two zones. The transparent pool behaves like Bitcoin: amounts and addresses are visible to anyone. The shielded pool encrypts amounts and participants using zero-knowledge proofs, and is genuinely strong — arguably stronger cryptography than any alternative.
Your wallet can hold a balance in either, and it does not always make that obvious at a glance. Which one your funds sit in determines what you have to do to move them, and whether you have the privacy you think you have.
Arriving at Zcash is not by itself a privacy gain. It is possession of the tool. The step that makes it real is one you take afterwards, by shielding the funds from within your own wallet.
Most services — including this one — deliver to a transparent address beginning with t, because that is what is universally supported. That deposit is visible on-chain with its amount and destination. If you want it protected, shielding is your next action, and it costs a small fee and a few blocks.
If your balance is in the shielded pool, you will usually need to unshield to a transparent address before sending it to an external service. That is an extra step, an extra fee, and a few more blocks. Knowing it in advance stops it looking like something has gone wrong.
Unified addresses — the modern format that wraps several types together — simplify a great deal of this, but not every service recognises them yet. If an address is rejected, that is usually why, and supplying the transparent one resolves it.
Zcash fees are low and stable in both pools, so there is no benefit to watching the clock the way there is with Bitcoin. Blocks arrive roughly every 75 seconds. The variable part of any ZEC swap is almost always the other chain, not this one.
What does need watching is the address. Shielded, transparent and unified addresses look different from one another, and giving a service a format it does not accept means a payment that does not arrive.
Store your Zcash wallet's seed offline, on paper, away from any connected device — before anything arrives. A chain with strong encryption is no more forgiving about lost access than any other.
Delivery is to transparent addresses, which every Zcash wallet can receive. Shielding after receipt is a one-step operation inside your own wallet and is how the privacy is actually applied.
The shielded pool's cryptography is very strong. The practical difference is that Zcash's protection is optional and Monero's is not — which means Zcash privacy depends on the user taking a step, and most of the failures come from skipping it.
