Monero Atomic Swaps in 2026: eigenwallet vs BasicSwap vs UnstoppableSwap

The Short Answer

If you want to trade Bitcoin for Monero peer to peer, with no service holding your coins at any point, two desktop tools do the job in 2026: eigenwallet and BasicSwap. If you searched for UnstoppableSwap, that is eigenwallet. The project renamed itself in July 2025, and unstoppableswap.net now points to eigenwallet.org.

  • eigenwallet: a Monero wallet with built-in BTC → XMR atomic swaps. The easiest peer-to-peer way to buy Monero, but one direction only.
  • BasicSwap: a full peer-to-peer exchange with an order book, about a dozen coins and Monero swaps in both directions. More setup, more flexibility.
  • A fixed-rate swap on SuperSwap: no software to install, no counterparty to find, 13 coins and a quote that already includes the network fee. You rely on the service to complete the order rather than on a protocol.

💡 Who is this for? Anyone choosing between running their own atomic swap software and using a no-KYC swap service to get Monero, or to move out of it.

What a Monero Atomic Swap Actually Is

An atomic swap is a trade between two people on two different blockchains where either both sides complete or both sides get their coins back. Bitcoin and Monero cannot run a shared script, so BTC–XMR swaps use adaptor signatures: when one side claims its coins, the claim itself reveals the key the other side needs. Timelocks on the Bitcoin side give the buyer a way out if the other party stops responding.

Neither tool holds your funds or asks for an account. The price is convenience: you install software, wait for confirmations on both chains and need a counterparty. Our Monero atomic swap guide covers the mechanics in depth.

eigenwallet (Formerly UnstoppableSwap)

What it is

eigenwallet is an open-source desktop app that combines a Monero wallet with a Bitcoin-to-Monero atomic swap client. It grew out of COMIT's xmr-btc-swap project, whose original repository is now archived; development carries on under the eigenwallet name. The name changed because the team set out to build a full Monero wallet, not only a swap tool. Current versions can open existing Monero wallet files, create or restore a wallet from a seed, and send XMR.

How a swap works

You are the taker. Market makers run a program called the Automated Swap Backend (ASB) and advertise offers through rendezvous points on the network. Each offer shows a minimum and maximum amount, a markup over the centralized-exchange rate, and whether an anti-spam deposit applies.

  1. 1
    Fund the built-in Bitcoin wallet

Send BTC to the app's own self-custody address. The docs suggest at least about 0.0003 BTC, and rates usually improve from around 0.003 BTC.

  2. 2
    Pick a maker

Compare markups and limits. A lower markup means more Monero for the same Bitcoin.

  3. 3
    Confirm the swap

You get a few minutes to accept the final Bitcoin amount, Monero amount, rate and network fees.

  4. 4
    Wait for both locks

Your Bitcoin is locked in a shared multisig output (about 10 minutes for a confirmation). The maker then locks Monero, redeems the Bitcoin, and the app redeems your XMR.

If something goes wrong

If a swap stalls, it can be cancelled after 24 Bitcoin confirmations, about 4 hours. You then have a refund window of roughly 24 hours, and the app handles the refund itself as long as it runs for a few minutes inside that window. If the window passes, the maker can claim the Bitcoin. Some makers also use an anti-spam deposit, typically 2%: you receive most of the refund first and the rest after a further timelock.

Setup at a glance

  • Desktop only for now: Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux (AppImage, Flatpak, AUR). The project says mobile is coming.
  • Each release ships with .asc signature files. Verify the download with GPG before installing.
  • Tor is built in, so the app's network traffic runs over Tor without extra configuration.

Who it suits

People who buy Monero with Bitcoin, want a clean desktop app and can leave it open until the swap finishes. It does not sell XMR or take any other coin.

BasicSwap (BasicSwap DEX)

What it is

BasicSwap, also called BasicSwap DEX or BSX, is an open-source, MIT-licensed peer-to-peer exchange developed by the Particl community. It describes itself as a messaging layer with an interface on top: it carries offers and swap messages between peers, while the swaps settle on each coin's own blockchain using the official core wallets.

Coins and directions

BasicSwap lists Bitcoin, Monero, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dash, Dogecoin, Decred, Firo, PIVX, Particl, Wownero and Namecoin. Monero works in both directions, so you can buy or sell XMR, and you can trade pairs that never touch Bitcoin, such as LTC and XMR.

How a swap works

Offers sit on a decentralized order book. Makers post offers at a price they choose and takers place bids on them. Messages travel over Particl's SMSG network, and release 0.19.0 (October 2026) added Nostr alongside SMSG and SimpleX. Once a bid is accepted, both sides lock coins on-chain; Monero pairs use adaptor signatures, like eigenwallet. Release 0.19.0 also added a beta Smart Buy page that splits one order across several offers.

Fees

There is no trading or protocol fee, only network fees on each chain. Your real cost is the offer's price, so check it against the market rate.

Setup at a glance

  • The documented route is Docker. On Windows that means WSL 2 plus Docker Desktop; Linux and macOS can also run it without Docker.
  • You operate it through a local web interface in your browser.
  • By default it runs each coin's core wallet, so plan for disk space and sync time. Bitcoin can start from a pruned chain or a fast-sync snapshot, recent versions can optionally use Electrum servers for Bitcoin and Litecoin, and Monero can point at a remote node.
  • Tor is supported as an option.

Who it suits

People comfortable with a terminal who want to sell Monero as well as buy it, trade altcoin pairs or post their own offers. The most flexible option, and the most work to set up.

Speed, Liquidity and Fees: The Real Trade-Offs

Speed

Atomic swaps move at the pace of confirmations on both chains plus the protocol's own steps. eigenwallet's docs describe the happy path as roughly 12 minutes or more, most of it waiting for Bitcoin. BasicSwap also depends on the other side being online to answer your bid. Whichever route you use, Monero you receive needs 10 confirmations, about 20 minutes, before you can spend it again.

Liquidity

Every atomic swap is filled by one counterparty with a limited balance. eigenwallet makers set a maximum, and BasicSwap fills only what open offers cover. Larger amounts or thinner pairs may find nothing.

Fees

eigenwallet makers earn through their markup, and BasicSwap prices are whatever the offer says. On top, you pay network fees for the lock transactions, and more if a swap needs a refund. On small amounts those fixed costs weigh more.

When a Fixed-Rate Swap on SuperSwap Is Easier

A fixed-rate swap is simpler when:

  • You want XMR → BTC without running BasicSwap and its coin wallets. Start an XMR to BTC swap or read the XMR to BTC guide.
  • You start from a coin neither tool covers, such as ETH, SOL, USDT, USDC, XRP, ADA or ZEC.
  • You do not want to keep a desktop app running through a cancel and refund window.
  • You want one quote with the network fee already included, rather than comparing maker markups.

SuperSwap offers 49 pairs across 13 coins, with no account and no KYC. The minimum is $50, most swaps take 5–30 minutes, the rate comes with a best-rate guarantee matched to live market rates, and support is available 24/7 at service@superswap.cx. The trade-off is honest: you rely on the service to complete the order, where an atomic swap relies on the protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is eigenwallet the same as UnstoppableSwap?

Yes. UnstoppableSwap renamed itself to eigenwallet in July 2025, and unstoppableswap.net now redirects to eigenwallet.org. It is the same open-source project, now built as a full Monero wallet with Bitcoin to Monero atomic swaps included.

Can I swap Monero to Bitcoin with eigenwallet?

No. eigenwallet only swaps Bitcoin to Monero. To sell XMR for BTC peer to peer you need BasicSwap, which supports Monero in both directions. If you do not want to run BasicSwap, a fixed-rate swap service is the simpler route for XMR to BTC.

Does BasicSwap charge trading fees?

No. BasicSwap has no trading or protocol fee, so you only pay the normal network fees on each chain. Your real cost is the price in the offer you take, which is set by the person who posted it, so compare it with the market rate before you bid.

What happens if an atomic swap fails halfway?

The protocol refunds you. In eigenwallet, a stalled swap can be cancelled after 24 Bitcoin confirmations, about 4 hours, and you then have roughly 24 hours to claim the refund. The app does this for you if it runs for a few minutes inside that window. If you miss the window, the maker can claim the Bitcoin, so do not uninstall the app mid-swap.

Are Monero atomic swaps safe?

The design is sound: neither party can take the other's coins, and timelocks give the buyer a way back. The practical risks are on your side: downloading a fake build, closing the app during a refund window, or taking a poor rate. Verify release signatures, start with a small amount, and keep the app open until the swap shows as complete.
