Feather Wallet Guide (2026): Setup, Safety and Getting XMR In

Updated · SuperSwap team

Feather is a free, open-source Monero wallet for desktop computers. It is light (it does not download the whole blockchain), routes traffic over Tor by default, and works with Ledger and Trezor hardware wallets. It is Monero-only and has no phone app.

This guide covers download and verification, the Windows antivirus warning, setup, and how to get XMR into the wallet. We run Superswap.cx, an instant swap service that pays out Monero, so the last part points to our own swap. Everything else comes from Feather's website, documentation and GitHub, checked on October 16, 2026.

Download and Verify Feather

Download Feather only from featherwallet.org or the feather-wallet GitHub organisation. Search results also show look-alike wallet sites, so type the address yourself. Copies that someone has tampered with are the real risk with any wallet download.

  1. Download the build for your system plus its .asc signature file.
  2. Import the signing key for dev@featherwallet.org, for example with gpg --keyserver hkps://keys.openpgp.org --search dev@featherwallet.org.
  3. Check the key fingerprint is 8185 E158 A333 30C7 FD61 BC0D 1F76 E155 CEFB A71C.
  4. Run gpg --verify on the signature. You should see "Good signature from dev@featherwallet.org". On Windows, Gpg4win does the same job.

"Feather Wallet Is a Virus"? Why Windows Flags It

Windows Defender flags the 2.8.1 installer as Trojan:Win32/Pomal!rfn, and about 20 engines on VirusTotal flag it too. The Feather developer calls it a false positive. Antivirus engines react to Monero-related strings such as "cryptonight" (also used by mining malware) and to the bundled Tor. Feather does not mine.

Go by the signature, not the antivirus. If your file passes the GPG check above, it is the genuine release. Restore it from quarantine and add a narrow exclusion for that one file. Don't turn off your antivirus. If the signature check fails, delete the file.

How to Set Up Feather Wallet

  1. First start: pick how to connect. "Automatic" uses Feather's list of public nodes, or you can enter your own node. Then pick when to use Tor. The default sends everything except wallet sync over Tor; "always" is the most private.
  2. Create a wallet: File → New/Restore → Create new wallet.
  3. Write down the 16-word seed on paper. It is the only backup. Anyone with these words can spend your XMR, so never type it into a website or a chat.
  4. Name the wallet, choose a folder and set a password. The password protects the wallet file on this computer; the seed restores it anywhere.
  5. Wait for the wallet to sync. New wallets sync quickly because the seed records its creation date.

How to Receive XMR in Feather

Open the Receive tab and click Create New Address. Feather makes a new subaddress (a Monero address is 95 characters long). Label it with who is paying you, then copy it. Every subaddress pays into the same balance, and using a fresh one for each sender keeps those payments unlinkable.

Before sending a large amount for the first time, send a small test amount. Monero needs 10 confirmations, about 20 minutes, before new funds can be spent.

Getting Monero Into Feather

Feather has no buy button and no built-in swap, so the XMR has to come from somewhere else. Most big exchanges no longer list Monero (see which ones still do), so the usual routes are:

  • Swap crypto you already hold. Enter your Feather subaddress as the payout address on an instant swap and send BTC, ETH, USDT or another coin. Our BTC → XMR and USDT → XMR pages show live rates.
  • Buy with cash or bank transfer, person to person. Peer-to-peer markets like Haveno sell XMR for fiat with no ID check, but they take longer and involve a security deposit.
  • Get paid in XMR. Give a separate subaddress to each person paying you.

Many people use two: Cake on the phone for small amounts and Feather with a hardware wallet for savings. Our Monero wallet guide compares more options.

Privacy Settings Worth Changing

  • Tor "always": routes wallet sync over Tor too. Slower, but no node sees your IP.
  • Your own node: if you run monerod at home, point Feather at it so no third party serves your wallet data.
  • A new subaddress per sender: stops two payers from linking their payments to you.
  • Coin control: choose which outputs pay for a transaction when you want to keep funds from different sources apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Feather Wallet safe?

Feather is open source, built reproducibly and signed by its developer, and it has been maintained since 2020. The main risk is a fake download, so get it from featherwallet.org or GitHub and check the GPG signature before installing.

Why does Windows Defender say Feather is a virus?

Windows Defender flags the 2.8.1 installer as Trojan:Win32/Pomal!rfn. The developer says this is a false positive caused by Monero mining-related strings and the bundled Tor. If the file passes the GPG signature check, it is the genuine release.

Is there a Feather Wallet app for Android or iPhone?

No. Feather runs only on Windows, macOS, Linux, Tails and Whonix. On a phone, Cake Wallet is the common Monero choice.

What is the latest version of Feather Wallet?

The latest published release is 2.8.1, from April 14, 2025. Version 2.9 was tagged on GitHub in July 2026 but had not been published on the download page as of October 16, 2026.

Does Feather Wallet work with Ledger and Trezor?

Yes: Ledger Nano S, Nano S Plus, Nano X, Stax and Flex, and Trezor Model T, Safe 3 and Safe 5. The Trezor Safe 7 is not supported yet.

Can I buy Monero inside Feather?

No. Feather has no built-in purchase or swap. Send XMR to a Feather subaddress from an instant swap such as Superswap.cx, a P2P market, or another wallet.

Is Feather a 16-word or 25-word seed wallet?

New wallets use a 16-word Polyseed, which records the wallet's creation date so it syncs faster. Feather can also restore standard 25-word Monero seeds.
