Monero has spent two years losing places to trade it. OKX dropped it in January 2024, Binance in February 2024, and Kraken region by region from 2024 through 2026. The best-known no-KYC venues went too: LocalMonero closed in 2024, and Canadian police seized TradeOgre in September 2025.
Demand went the other way. Monero rallied past $500 in September 2026 as privacy coins outran the rest of the market. This post covers the full delisting timeline, the short version of why it happened, and every route that still gets you XMR in 2026, with what each one costs you in time, fees and trust.
| When | Exchange or venue | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 5, 2024 | OKX | Removed XMR, ZEC and DASH trading pairs. |
| Feb 20, 2024 | Binance | Delisted XMR worldwide; leftover balances were later converted to USDC. |
| May–Nov 2024 | LocalMonero | P2P trading stopped on May 14; the site closed in November. |
| Jun 2024 | Kraken (Ireland, Belgium) | XMR removed for clients in both countries. |
| Oct 31, 2024 | Kraken (EEA) | XMR removed across the European Economic Area. |
| Sep 2, 2025 | Kraken (Canada) | XMR trading disabled; accounts moved to withdrawal-only. |
| Sep 2025 | TradeOgre | Seized by the RCMP in the largest crypto seizure in Canadian history. |
| Apr–May 2026 | Kraken (India) | XMR, DASH and ZEC deposits and trading halted, then remaining balances liquidated. |
| May–Jun 2026 | RetoSwap (Haveno) | Two exploits of the Haveno protocol; trading halted June 17, patched and resumed from June 20. |
Regulated exchanges have to trace who sends funds to whom, and Monero is built so outside observers can't. Rather than build special handling for one coin, most custodial exchanges dropped it wherever rules tightened, which is why Kraken's exits came one country at a time.
Nothing changed in Monero itself. Blocks keep coming and transactions keep confirming; what shrank is the custodial on-ramp. That's why every route below either skips custodial exchanges entirely or uses them only briefly.
Send BTC, ETH, LTC, SOL or USDT and receive XMR in your own wallet, usually within 5 to 30 minutes, at a rate locked when you create the order. There's no account and no ID. This is the route that replaced TradeOgre for most people: the service never holds a balance for you, so there's nothing to freeze or seize mid-trade. Superswap.cx works this way, and aggregators such as Trocador compare several services at once.
Version 3.20, released on August 25, 2026, added native Monero to THORChain: no operator and no wrapped tokens. The rate floats, the XMR pool is still thin, and a swap takes 20 to 60 minutes. Our THORChain 3.20 breakdown covers when it makes sense.
BTC-to-XMR atomic swaps trade directly between two people's wallets with no intermediary at all. They're the most trust-minimised route and also the slowest and most technical, and liquidity depends on who's offering at the time. See our Monero atomic swap guide.
Bisq supports BTC/XMR trades, with both sides posting a security deposit. Haveno, the Monero-focused P2P network, took the hardest hit of 2026: its largest network, RetoSwap, lost about 7,000 XMR (roughly $2.7 million) to an exploit in May and halted trading in June after a second one. It resumed after a patch on June 20 (our RetoSwap review has the details); run the latest client before you rely on it.
A shrinking number of centralized exchanges still list Monero, mostly with full identity checks and region-by-region limits, and as Kraken showed, a listing can vanish from your country at a few weeks' notice. If you use one, withdraw to your own wallet instead of leaving XMR on the platform.
Some Monero wallets, Cake Wallet among them, include a built-in exchange that routes through third-party swap providers. It's convenient on mobile; compare the quote with a direct swap before you confirm.
| Route | Account / KYC | Typical time | Rate | Who holds funds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instant swap | None | 5–30 min | Locked when you order | The service, for minutes |
| THORChain 3.20 | None | 20–60 min | Floating | Validator-signed vaults |
| Atomic swap | None | 30 min to hours | Agreed by both sides | Nobody (on-chain contract) |
| Bisq (P2P) | None | Hours | Set by the counterparty | Multisig escrow |
| Centralized exchange | Full KYC | Minutes, plus withdrawal | Order book | The exchange |
The most common routes have their own pages with live rates: BTC → XMR, ETH → XMR, USDT → XMR and LTC → XMR.
Probably, in more regions; every recent exit has come country by country. The counter-trend is that non-custodial liquidity keeps growing: THORChain's native pool, atomic swaps and instant swap services don't depend on any single exchange's licence. Plan for the centralized on-ramp to keep shrinking, and keep your XMR in a wallet you control.
Binance delisted XMR worldwide on February 20, 2024, after a periodic review of the assets it lists. Custodial exchanges that must trace senders and recipients have found privacy coins hard to support.
Yes. Non-custodial instant swaps, THORChain (native XMR since August 25, 2026), BTC-to-XMR atomic swaps, Bisq and a shrinking set of centralized exchanges all still offer XMR. Instant swaps are the fastest route that needs no account.
OKX (January 2024), Binance (February 2024), and Kraken in Ireland and Belgium (June 2024), the EEA (October 2024), Canada (September 2025) and India (April to May 2026). LocalMonero closed in 2024, and TradeOgre was seized in September 2025.
Yes. RetoSwap, the largest Haveno network, halted trading on June 17, 2026, after a second exploit of the Haveno protocol (an attack in May had taken about 7,000 XMR). It patched both in v1.8.0 on June 20 and has resumed trading. Run the latest client before you trade.
For most people, a non-custodial instant swap into your own wallet: the rate is locked, the service holds funds only for the minutes the order is open, and there is no account to freeze. Test with a small amount first, and use THORChain or an atomic swap if you want no operator at all.
Kraken has removed XMR one region at a time: Ireland and Belgium, then the EEA, Canada and India. It has not announced a global delisting, but anyone relying on a centralized listing should expect the list of supported regions to keep shrinking.
