Zcash had the strongest run of any major coin in 2026. It crossed $1,000 in September for the first time in a decade, Grayscale published research arguing ZEC could take share from Bitcoin, and Valour listed a Zcash ETP in Europe. Most of that demand flows through exchanges that ask for ID. You don't need one.
This guide covers the three no-KYC routes that work today, how they differ on privacy (some land in a shielded address, some don't), and what changed this year with the Ironwood upgrade and the Zashi wallet's new name.
If you already hold crypto, a non-custodial instant swap is the quickest route: send BTC, ETH, XMR, LTC, SOL or USDT and receive ZEC in your own wallet, usually within 5 to 30 minutes. There's no account and no ID, and the rate is locked when you create the order. For a deeper walkthrough, see our Zcash exchange no-KYC guide.
Pair pages with live rates: BTC → ZEC, XMR → ZEC, ZEC → BTC, ZEC → XMR and ZEC → ETH.
Zodl has a built-in Swap feature that converts dozens of coins and tokens into shielded ZEC through NEAR Intents, a decentralised cross-chain exchange. The ZEC goes straight to a fresh shielded address in your wallet, so the purchase never touches a transparent address. NEAR and Zodl announced a partnership on August 20, 2026 to expand it, and by early September ZEC made up nearly 40% of NEAR Intents' volume.
The trade-off: it only works inside Zodl, and the quote depends on NEAR Intents liquidity at the moment you swap. For larger amounts, compare it with an instant swap quote.
Since version 3.20 on August 25, 2026, THORChain swaps native ZEC against BTC, ETH and stablecoins with no operator. The catch for privacy: it pays out to transparent t-addresses only, so the purchase is visible on-chain until you shield it, and the young ZEC pool means noticeable slippage on larger amounts. Our THORChain Zcash guide walks through it.
| Route | Account / KYC | Lands shielded? | Typical time | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instant swap | None | If you give a shielded address | 5–30 min | Locked when you order |
| Zodl Swap | None (in-wallet) | Yes, a fresh shielded address | Minutes | Quoted at swap |
| THORChain 3.20 | None | No, transparent only | 15–45 min | Floating |
| Centralized exchange | Full KYC | Usually a transparent withdrawal | Minutes, plus withdrawal | Order book |
Yes. Non-custodial instant swaps, the swap built into the Zodl wallet, and THORChain all get you ZEC without an account or ID. Instant swaps are the fastest; Zodl's swap lands straight in a shielded address.
Yes. The Zashi team left Electric Coin Co. in January 2026, formed the Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL), and renamed the app Zodl without changing how it works.
Update your wallet and accept the migration when it offers it. Ironwood, activated on July 28, 2026, is a new shielded pool built on the Orchard design with a corrected circuit. Orchard is now withdrawal-only, and there is no evidence the flaw behind the upgrade was ever exploited.
Not at launch. THORChain's Zcash integration pays out to transparent t-addresses, so shield the ZEC in your wallet once it arrives, or use a route that pays out shielded.
Not profitably for most people. Zcash uses the Equihash algorithm, which specialised ASIC miners now dominate.
Usually 5 to 30 minutes with an instant swap, depending on how fast the coin you send confirms. THORChain swaps typically take 15 to 45 minutes.
