Best LocalMonero Alternatives (2026): Where to Buy XMR Now

Updated · SuperSwap team

Superswap.cx is a crypto swap service with no account and no KYC: there is no registration, and identity documents are not routinely requested. It swaps 17 assets: BTC, ETH, XMR, ZEC, LTC, SOL, BCH, DASH, XRP, DOGE and ADA, plus USDT and USDC on Ethereum (ERC-20), Tron (TRC-20) and Solana. Fees are built into the displayed rate, swaps are processed in 5–30 minutes after the deposit is confirmed, and the minimum swap is $50. The main difference: LocalMonero, which closed in 2024, let you buy Monero with cash or a bank transfer, while Superswap.cx does not take fiat and instead turns crypto you already hold into XMR.

For years, LocalMonero was the default place to buy Monero with cash or a bank transfer, without ID. It closed in 2024. This page covers what happened and which replacements actually work in October 2026.

Full disclosure: we run Superswap.cx, an instant swap service and one of the options below. The others come from their own websites and kycnot.me, checked on October 19, 2026.

What Happened to LocalMonero?

LocalMonero announced its closure on May 7, 2024 and stopped new sign-ups and ads that day. Trading ended on May 14, 2024, and the site shut for good on November 7, 2024, after a six-month window to withdraw. Funds not withdrawn by then were treated as abandoned. The team gave no detailed reason beyond "a combination of internal and external factors". Its sister site AgoraDesk closed on the same schedule. localmonero.co now shows a closure notice.

1. RetoSwap (Haveno): The Closest Replacement

RetoSwap is the main public network running Haveno, open-source software built around Monero. Like LocalMonero, it has a fiat order book with dozens of payment methods. Unlike LocalMonero, no company holds the coins: they sit in a 2-of-3 multisig between buyer, seller and arbitrator.

  • Fees: 0.1% maker, 0.8% taker on crypto trades, 2% taker on fiat trades.
  • Catch: both sides lock a security deposit of at least 15%, paid in XMR. A first-time buyer needs a no-deposit offer or some starter XMR.
  • Apps: desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) and Android. Tor is built in.
  • Track record: two exploits in 2026, both patched; trading has been back since June 20, 2026. kycnot.me rates it 9/10. Details in our RetoSwap review.

2. XMR Bazaar: Classified Ads for Cash Trades

XMR Bazaar is a Monero marketplace for goods and services that also carries "cash to XMR" listings, which is the closest thing to LocalMonero's local cash trades. Sellers can offer escrow or a bond, but many trades come down to trusting the person you meet. Use sellers with feedback, meet somewhere public, and start small.

3. Instant Swap: If You Already Hold Crypto

Many LocalMonero users were really converting other crypto, not cash. If you hold BTC, ETH, LTC or USDT, an instant swap is the fastest route: no order book, no deposit, no counterparty to wait for. On Superswap.cx you pick the pair, paste your Monero address and get XMR in 5–30 minutes at a locked rate, with no account or ID.

4. Buy Bitcoin Peer to Peer, Then Swap

No-ID Bitcoin P2P markets have more liquidity than Monero ones. Buy BTC there, then swap it to XMR:

  • RoboSats: Lightning-based, Tor-only, no account. kycnot.me 10/10. It was offline from June 11 to July 5, 2026 and is back.
  • Hodl Hodl: Bitcoin-only P2P with multisig escrow and no verification.

Then use BTC → XMR to finish. Two steps, but often the cheapest no-ID route from a bank account.

5. Bisq: Works, but Only Against Bitcoin

Bisq v1 lists XMR only as an altcoin traded against BTC, so you need Bitcoin (including a BTC deposit) to buy Monero there. On May 1, 2026 an exploit drained about 11 BTC from open altcoin offers. Bisq patched it in version 1.10.0, and affected users were reimbursed by June 5, 2026. See our Bisq review.

LocalMonero Replacements to Avoid

  • OpenMonero: looks like LocalMonero, but it is custodial. kycnot.me scores it 4/10 with a trust score of 0, citing several XMR thefts between June 2025 and July 2026, two of them still unresolved.
  • TradeOgre: still recommended in some 2026 articles, but Canadian police seized and shut it down in September 2025.
  • Telegram "P2P bots" and escrow channels: no way to verify who runs them, and scams are common.
  • Look-alike "LocalMonero" sites promising to restore old accounts or balances. The real site closed for good in November 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to LocalMonero?

LocalMonero announced its closure on May 7, 2024, stopped trading on May 14, 2024, and shut down completely on November 7, 2024. The team cited "a combination of internal and external factors".

What is the best LocalMonero alternative?

For buying XMR with a bank transfer or PayPal without ID, RetoSwap (Haveno) is the closest replacement. For converting crypto you already hold, an instant swap is faster and needs no deposit.

Can I still get my money from LocalMonero?

No. Withdrawals closed on November 7, 2024, and funds left after that were treated as abandoned. Sites claiming they can recover LocalMonero balances are scams.

Is OpenMonero the same as LocalMonero?

No. OpenMonero is a separate, custodial site with a similar look. kycnot.me scores it 4/10 with a trust score of 0 after several reported thefts in 2025 and 2026.

How do I buy Monero with cash now?

Use RetoSwap (Haveno) offers with cash by mail or in person, or find a local seller on XMR Bazaar. Start with small amounts and use sellers with feedback.

Did AgoraDesk close too?

Yes. AgoraDesk, LocalMonero's sister site, closed on the same schedule in 2024.
